Outlast 2

Outlast is amazing. Simply put. It is one of my favourite horror games of all time, and Red Barrels provided a completely terrifying experience that I will never forget. Even better, I got it for free as a PS Plus game one month. Now, we’re lucky enough to be getting a sequel. YAY.

If you aren’t aware of Outlast, you may need to question a few life choices you’ve made and sort that out. In the meantime, I’ll quickly run you through it. You play as an investigative journalist brought to Mount Massive Asylum by a mysterious email that says something isn’t quite right up there. Naturally, you head up to the asylum, sneak in through a broken window, and immerse yourself in the disturbing nightmare that is this asylum.

Next thing you know, you’re peeking around corners, using a night-vision camera to cut through the darkness, knowing that you're running low on batteries and regretting ever making the trip. Also, there will be a time when two psychotic brothers dangle their junk in your face as they talk about how much they'd like to kill you. Basically, it’s terrifying.

Outlast 2 will apparently be set in this same universe, but with new characters in a new setting. According to the Steam page, the game will “test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.” Never fear, we may see Mount Massive Asylum again. During an interview with Bloody Disgusting, a great horror site that I’m kind of in love with, the studio said that “we might go back to Mount Massive Asylum one day, but for now we have new ideas and themes we’d like to explore and we think we’re cooking up something special.” Sounds good to me.

Outlast 2 is scheduled for a Fall 2016 release on PS4, Xbox One and PC. There isn’t really much more information available yet, but when it shows up, it’s sure to do so on the website, Facebook or Twitter. I may still be playing through the Whistleblower DLC for the first game, because my heart can only take so much, but I just. cannot. wait.
