Slender: The Eight Pages

Have you heard of the Slenderman? If not, you may have been hiding under a rock for a few years. Room for one more? It’s probably safer under there.

Slender Man was born from one of the nightmare-inducing myths created by Creepy Pasta, a place where people write and share horror stories of all shapes and sizes. He, or more likely ‘it’, is unnaturally tall, wears a black suit, and has a completely blank, featureless face.

Then came Slender: The Eight Pages, a horrific first-person title that tasked gamers with collecting eight pages placed around a pitch-black forest. These all included creepy messages and pictures, potentially drawn by children that Slenderman has taken. However, as soon as the first page is collected, he comes for you.

You’ll turn around, and there he is, standing completely still, looking at you. The more pages you’ve collected, the more times this will happen, and the scarier the game will get. Eventually, you’ll turn a corner, or look behind you, and he’ll be right there. If he’s close enough that the entire screen distorts, it’s game over.

The Eight Pages is about as indie as a horror game gets, but it excels in creating an uneasy, tense, and fast-paced fright – mostly as a result of its impressive sound design. Since the success of this free game, many more Slenderman games have been created, such as Slender: The Arrival, which is available on pretty much every platform going, including next-gen consoles.
