Friday the 13th

Happy Friday! Seems like the perfect day to write about the upcoming Friday the 13th game. I can't
say I'm not excited at the prospect of playing a game involving Jason Voorhees, one of my favourite slashers of all time, but it's a double-edged machete. This also happens to be the reason that Last Year, an asymmetric slasher multiplayer game that appeared on Kickstarter, almost went into development limbo. Can't we all just get along and kill teenagers together?

Even horror icons have mothers.  It's not weird.

Friday the 13th, though completely under wraps since being first announced, is going to be an asymmetrical multiplayer game in which a group of players take control of a group of terror-stricken camp counsellors, while one player hunts them down as Jason Voorhees, machete in hand – sounds very similar to Last Year, no? It does have the original slasher legend though, so that’s something. Unfortunately, that’s pretty much all that has been announced about this game so far, other than the fact that it is in development for multiple platforms and will tie into the upcoming television series.

"With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form,” explains Sean S. Cunningham, creator of the original film that is credited by many as the genesis of the slasher/horror genre. “We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect.”

This is almost better than a screenshot of a game, if you ask me.

Despite my current bitterness over the unnecessary lawsuit against Last Year, I'll still be keeping an eye out for Friday the 13th game news. However, I'll be keeping my expectations as low as possible, because it was initially slated for an October 2015 release. If you hadn't realised, that's pretty damn close, and the little information shared about the game so far doesn't bode well for a finished (or potentially well-made) game that honours the beloved slasher classic. I hope I'm wrong, because little Jason has suffered enough.
