Dark Flame

Taharial, a crusader in the Batlic Crusades, is on an adventure to purge all evil. He has already lost his brothers to the insanity, and must now take down the vessels of evil before everything is reduced to ash. Such is the concept behind Dark Flame, a 2D action-RPG that is as nostalgic as it is rock-filled. And, thanks to a quick conversation with Warren Smith on Twitter, I found out that it is also currently looking for funding on Kickstarter, with a demo available on IndieDB.

Taharial is able to fight off evil with powerful weapons and dark magic, and must combine the two well to survive in the fast-paced action of Dark Flame. Having watched the trailer above, I was reminded of Rogue Legacy, which is easily one of my favourite 2D action-RPGs of all time, so it is definitely a good comparison in my book. Throw a gothic style on top of that, and Smith is really onto something.

In addition to the weapons and spells available to Taharial, players will also be able to find new armour, which will change the crusader’s appearance. Why even bother trying to take out the evil, cursed and undead if you’re not going to look good while doing it? Taharial gets it. Hopefully he will also find the hidden chambers throughout the game, and find unique powers to aid him in his tortured quest.

As I said, Dark Flame is on Kickstarter right now, trying to raise $75,000 USD. For only $15, you can get your hands on a digital copy of the game when it is released on Steam. If you’re the type that likes to try before you buy (no judgment from me), you can also try the pre-alpha demo here. More information on the game can be found on the website, or by getting into a conversation with the developer on Twitter. That’s how I do it, anyway.
